Replica of eagle scuplture planned for Civil War Memorial |
Legion Park, Main Street, Lemont |
by Richard H. Lee
I have several reasons for supporting this project to erect a memorial to the soldiers from Lemont Township who served in the Civil War. Of course the primary one is celebrating local history and bringing the history into the public's attention. History can be and should be both educational and inspirational. The purpose of the Civil War remains a mystery to many people today.
But beyond that, I also see this going up quickly, hopefully next year in downtown Lemont and having a big opening ceremony with people portraying Civil War characters to reenact some history. The media, I believe, would take notice of this and we should get some really good publicity from this. I wouldn't be surprised if TV stations covered it, especially if we had some reenactment people like the Lincoln portrayer.
Second, I have an interest in tourism and I think this could be an attractive site for tourists, especially those interested in the Civil War. There are at least two other sites connected with the Civil War in Lemont. One is right across the street, the train station from which most enlistees went by train to the training camps and some returned home. Another is the Old Stone Church, formerly the Methodist Church on Lemont Street that was used as a recruitment depot.
Thirdly, I think this would be a logical place to have annual reenactments related to the Civil War and programs to add to local celebrations and tourists. The Historical Society could assist and leftover funds could be used to pay the expenses. Some nice Civil War era photographs could be purchased and displayed during such celebrations. We might even consider purchasing a cannon replica to add to the historical flavor.
Money is now being raised for the pedestal and the bronze casting. The completed artist depiction will be placed on a prominent Lemont IL Park District site for the public's inspection. The entire cost is estimated to be about $15,000. Your contribution in any amount would be great appreciated. Contributions are tax deductible and should be mailed to:
Attn.: Civil War Memorial
The checks shoulld be made payable to the Lemont Park Foundation with a notation that it is for the "Civil War Memorial." A special plaque will be made honoring those who give $100 or more.
