Historical Society to Provide Technical Assistance for Civil War Momument Project

The Lemont Area Historical Society will be providing technical assistance to the recently formed Lemont Civil War Memorial Committee to erect a statue in Memorial Park honoring the approximately 300 soldiers from Lemont Township who served in the Civil War. Lemont Township was required to sign up 33 solders to fight for the Union, but at least 293 eventually enlisted. Of those 293 so far identified, only 63 returned. Other than Chicago, Lemont Township was probably the largest recruiting station for the Union Army in northeast Illinois.

Preliminary plans feature a three foot square base beween three and four feet tall with a sculpture of an eagle appropriately one and half feet tall.

Additional details of the Committee's plans may be found here.
