Construction of Sanitary & Ship Canal

Lemont, Cook County, Illinois

Circa late 1890's. It was built to the north of the Illinois & Michigan (I&M) Canal (which had begun in 1837) and south of the Dupage River. It's most pressing need when initially conceived was as a means of shipping sewage from Chicago down State. Overcrowding and an inadequate sewage system in Chicago had resulted in increased outbreaks of fears of Cholera and dysentary outbreaks.

For additional information on water flow in the Canal, please see U.S. Geological Survery Real-Time Water Data for Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal near Lemont, IL. (Note: inverse relationship which occurs when thunderstorm run-off cause water flow to increase and the Canal water level depth to temporarily drop.)
