Also known as "The Shrine of the Poor Souls", this is the oldest church in Lemont and attended by many of Irish I&M Canal workers starting in the 1830's. It is located atop a bold promontory at the confluence of the Sag and Des Plaines Valleys. A French missionary, Father St. Cyr, first celebrated mass at this location in 1650 serving the fur trappers of the area. It is also said that it has the oldest cemetery in the Chicago Archdiocese. |
