St. Matthews Lutheran Church

Lemont, Cook County, Illinois

This picture was taken before 1918. St. Matthews was also known as the German Lutheran church (The Swedish Lutheran is located two blocks to the South). It is located at 305 Illinois Street at the intersection of Lemont and Illinois Streets. The church suffered a major fire in 1918 which destroyed its prominent steeple and many of its records.

The congregation dates from the late 1860's. Construction of the church (pictured) started in 1887. It was constructed with commercial grade Lemont limestone and features exterior walls three feet thick in places.
