DELLWOOD PARK

LOCKPORT, WILL COUNTY, ILLINOIS

Like the Chicago & Alton Railroad's Alton Park in Lemont, the Chicago & Joliet Electric Railway Company built the Dellwood Park in 1906 as a way of increasing ridership. The park had a boathouse (next to the Dam), a large dance hall, and other attractions. Operated by the city of Lockport Township Park District, the 150 acre park continues to be a popular recreational park for Lemonters. A large fire in 1930 destroyed many of the original buildings such as the boathouse which were not replaced.

Dellwood Park is on the southern side of Lockport, Will County, Illinois on Route 171 and Woods Drive. (From downtown Lockport at State Street and 9th Street, drive south on State Street /Route 171 for about a mile and a half, and Woods Drive is on the left traversing up a large hillside. Once on Woods Drive, the Dellwood dam can be reached by going to the top of the hill and then turning right (twice) and going as far southwest as the road will go.
