LEMONT HIGH SCHOOL - 1896

Lemont, Cook County, Illinois

Situated on a prominent point overlooking the town at the intersection of Stephens Street and McCarthy Road, this fine example of the use of Lemont limestone was built and used for the first Lemont Township High School which opened in 1896. The original elementary Public School was in the 1869 building located in the rear (right side of picture). After the current and larger Lemont (Township) High School was opened on Julia Street in about 1925, the High School was then used as additional classroom space for the (now called Central) Elementary School allowing one room for each grade. Several additions starting in 1956 were made to the East side of the building and eventually all of the students were moved to the new facilities. The original High School and elementary buildings are now used for condominums.
