There were several "one room" country elementary schools in the rural areas around Lemont in the 19th century. The included one at the base of Walker Road known as Walker Road or Hastings School; Bell School located at Parker and Bell Roads; Derby School at McCarthy Road and Archer Avenue; Bracken School on 127th Street near St. Matthew's Cemetery ; Sag School at Route 83 and Archer Avenue. Opened in 1870, the Lemont Public School was located on McCarthy Road adjacent to the current Central School. By 1949, nearly all of these one rural room schools had been closed and consolidated in to what is now known as School District # 113A and housed in what was known as the Central School. The School expanded into the original High School building in 1925. The current Central School is next door at 410 McCarthy Road and now serves grades 3-5. Both the original 1870 Lemont Public School building located in the rear and the original High School in this 1909 picture are now a condomium complex. The identity of cousin "Stephanie S." of Stan Lashinski and Marie who were the 5-6th graders marked with the two "x"'s in the second row from the top, are not known. |
