The first secondary school in Lemont was the private St. James Academy which is opened about 1884 with 120 pupils. The building was a two-story structure made with Lemont limestone. By 1890, the Diocese of Chicago referred to it as "St. Patrick's" school led by four sisters of the St. Dominic Order, 80 boys and 90 girls. The first recorded graduating class was in 1893. While not used as a school for many years, the building, less its steeple, still stands next to St. Patrick's church on Illinois Street (below). Its student body is now apart of the combined St Alphonsus and St Patrick School. |
